FIFA World Cup 1962 Knock Out Stages

fifa world cup 1962 poster

Chile surprisingly reached the semi-finals prompting FIFA to switch their match to the National Stadium in Santiago in anticipation of a bumper crowd. Not surprisingly this infuriated the population of Viña del Mar, where the match was scheduled to have been played and fewer than 6,000 turned out to watch Czechoslovakia play Yugoslavia.

In a thrilling match that saw Garrincha, the "Little Bird" emerge as a new Brazilian star, England's effort and industry proved to be insufficient against the sheer talent of Brazil. Garrincha opened the scoring in the 33rd minute but Hitchens equalised six minutes later. The match continued as a contrast in styles with neither team able to seize the advantage until Vava put Brazil into the lead again after Springett failed to hold a thunderous free-kick after 54 minutes and then Garrincha struck a swerving shot from 25 yards that completely bemused the England goalkeeper.

For most South Americans this match would have been the ideal final. Brazil were 2-0 up after half an hour thanks to Garrincha. Toro pulled one back for the home team to keep them in the match at half-time. Vavá then scored for Brazil two minutes into the second half but Leonel Sánchez made it 3-2 from the penalty spot (61 mins) but with twelve minutes left, Vavá scored his second. In the final ten minutes Chile's Landa was sent off for rough play and he was followed a minute later by Garrincha after he kicked an opponent.

The Czechs wore the red shorts that they had adopted in the semi-final against Yugoslavia and must have thought they were in luck after Masopust gave them the lead after quarter of an hour. Brazil soon hit back, Amarildo equalising two minutes later after an uncharacteristic error by the Czech 'keeper, Schrojf. Zito and Vavá added two more in the second half by which time there was no way back for Czechoslovakia.
