Japan steered their way past Egypt with a confident performance. They took the lead after 14 minutes and, after Saad was sent off just before half-time for a professional foul, they never looked like losing control. Two late goals ended any hopes Egypt might have had of stealing an equaliser.

Honduras took an early lead but were pegged back after Crisanto was sent off in the 32nd minute. Against the odds, Honduras scored again just after half-time but they held the lead for just three minutes before Neymar equalised from a penalty. Damiao put the Brazilians in front on the hour, a lead they held until the final whistle. Honduras finished with nine men after Espinoza was sent off in the closing stages.

Team GB found themselves on the back foot against fast, attack-minded opponents and fell behind just before the half hour. Aaron Ramsey equalised from a penalty seven minutes later but his second penalty awarded minutes later was saved. As the match wore on the Brits looked short on attacking ideas, launching long balls for their forwards to chase that were easily snuffed out by Korea's defenders. By the end of extra-time both sides were exhausted but Korea held their nerve, scoring with all five of their kicks in the penalty competition. Sturridge's attempt to deceive the Korean goalkeeper misfired and his shot was easily saved to end British hopes of a medal.

The final score flattered the Brazilians who were, for long periods, pressed hard by the lively and attack-minded Korean team. Romulo put Brazil ahead in the 38th minute and two goals in quick succession from Damio in the second-half put their team into the final.

Hot favourites, Brazil, received an early shock when Oribe Peralta put Mexico ahead with only 29 seconds played. For all their individual talent, the Brazilians simply could not match the organisation and team work of their opponents. In the second half Brazil attacked with purpose but were vulnerable to the counter-attack and it was no great surprise when Peralta scored his second. In the final minutes, Hulk gave Brazil a slender lifeline and Oscar should have equalised when he had a free header close to goal with seconds left, but he put the ball over the bar.
